Neelan falls head over heels in love with a damsel named Kumudavalli. He expresses his love to her. Kumudavalli tells Neelan that she intends to marry only that person who is a staunch devotee of Vishnu. Neelan promptly converts and becomes a staunch Vaishnavite. This Neelan is none other than Tirumangai Alwar.

Spiritual transformation isn’t triggered by a celestial voice from the heavens. It isn’t accompanied by thunder or lightning or a shower of petals from the sky. It’s sometimes triggered by ordinary events in the lives of you and me. Even love can make it happen.

Periya Thirumozhi – The Twenty Third Set of Ten

1169. Hearing that he suckled poison from Putana, the women of the cow-herd clan identify him as the Lord of Sri Devi & Bhu Devi and shower petals on him. This Lord resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1170. The Lord who is referred to as the ‘Butter Thief’ by the women of the cow-herd clan, who is worshiped by all, who crawls in between the Maruda trees & who is venerated by the celestials who chant his thousand names, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1171. The Lord who is beckoned by the bangle-clad women of the cow-herd clan and who danced on the hood of the Kaliya snake, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1173. The Lord who destroyed Lanka, who lifted the mountain to save his cow-herd and who flies across the skies sitting on the back of the gigantic Garuda, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1174. The Lord who looks like a mighty mountain, who subdued the mad elephant Kuvalaya and who is worshiped both by the lotus-eyed damsels and by the celestials, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1175. The Lord who assumed the form of a lion with ferocious eyes & sharp claws to tear apart Hiranya and rescue Prahalada, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam.

1176. The Lord whose body looks like a dark rain bearing cloud and who holds the conch & discus in his hands, resides in Thillai Chitrakoodam along with his consorts – Sri Devi, Bhu Devi and Nappinnai.

1177. Those who read these verses of Tirumangai about the Lord of Thillai Chitrakoodam will forever be spared from the clutches of sin.
