Comparisons are often drawn between Meera and Andal. Both considered Lord Krishna to be their consort and their poems conveyed their love for the lord. While Andal found a supportive father in Periyalwar, Meera is supposed to have suffered persecution from her family members for her beliefs.
Consider yourself blessed if you have a family that understands and is supportive of what you are longing for.
Tiruppaavai – The Second Set of Five
479. The birds have started singing (the dawn is breaking!). Don’t you hear Garuda – the king of birds blowing the conch in the temple? The one who suckled Putana’s life out of her and who felled the wicked Sakatasura is none other than our Lord who slumbers on the serpent bed in the ocean. Ascetics take the name of Hari in ecstatic devotion. Doesn’t it gladden your heart to listen to it?
480. Don’t you hear the sparrows chirping? Can you smell the ghee wafting in and the sound of ornaments tinkling as the lasses of Gokul churn butter? How can you lie still when the name of Narayana is uttered? Oh girl with a lustrous body! Rise quickly from bed and open the door!
481. The eastern skies are lightening. The buffalos are getting ready to graze. Without proceeding for our bath, we girls are waiting at your doorstep. Oh beautiful girl, get up! Let us go and worship the lord who destroyed the horse faced asura and who felled the wrestlers sent by Kansa. Lord Krishna will bestow boons on all of us who keep fast in his honour! (Madhu and Kaidapa asuras steal the Vedas and hid themselves in the form of horses. Lord Vishnu assumes the face of a horse – Hayagriva and rescues the Vedas from the asuras).
482. There are twinkling lamps and bells making melodious music all around your house. Your bedroom is filled with fragrant smoke and a very comfortable bed. Is that why dear cousin sister, you are not getting up to open the door? Auntie! Is your daughter deaf or is she dumb? Has she been bewitched by a spell that keeps her in bed all the time? Tell her that we are going to worship the Mayavan (illusionist), Madhavan and Vaikuntan (the one who resides in Vaikunta).
483. Have you reached Heavens already? Is that why you are not opening the door? Why are you struck dumb? Has Kumbakarana who lost the battle to Rama, bequeathed his sleep to you? The Lord is waiting for us with his Tulasi garland. Lazy bones! Come to open the door!
So, who woke you up today? Have a nice day today and ever after. 🙂
