In his verses about one temple, Tirumangai Alwar makes references to other temples too. He saw the same Lord in various forms in various temples.

The Lord is one. His manifestations are many.

Periya Thirumozhi – The Fifty Eighth Set of Ten

Anjana depicts the Lord’s Matsya Avatar

1518. I saw in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who wore the sacred thread (as a Brahmin boy) & got three measures of the world measured in Mahabali’s yagna and who poses standing amidst the gentle drizzle on the Venkata Hills.

1519. I saw amidst the well-irrigated fields of Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who churned the ocean and then took the form of a fish (Matsya Avatar) during the deluge and who lives in Tiruvaali. (Tiruvaali located near Sirkazhi, is the birth-place of Tirumangai Alwar’s wife!)

1520. I saw in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who, seated on Garuda, rushed to the rescue of Gajendra from the clutches of a crocodile and who resides in Tirunaava. (This refers to the Tirunavaya Temple in Kerala which is said to be the place where Gajendra was rescued.)

1521. After searching for days together, I saw in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who took the form of Narasimha to tear apart the wicked Hiranyakasipu, who resides in the gardens of Tiruneermalai and who adorns a fragrant garland on his shoulders.

1522. I saw in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who felled Ravana in the island-fortress of Lanka by wielding his mighty bow & sharp arrows and who was affectionate to Vibheeshana.

1523. I saw in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who created all life-forms including the Devas from his Lotus flower, who is the lion-like son of the arrow-eyed Yashoda and who is beloved to all of us.

1524. I searched for and located in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who set fire to the Kandava forest, who sleeps in Thirumeyyam and who planted the wish-fulfilling Karpagam tree for Satyabhama in Dwaraka.

1525. I searched for with great affection and located in Tirunaraiyur the Lord who made kings & their armies attain the heaven of warriors by driving the chariot of Arjuna in the Mahabharata war.

1526. I searched for our ruler and located in Tirunaraiyur, the Lord who holds the fiery discus & conch in his hands and who slumbers amidst nectar-dripping flower gardens in Kumbakonam.

1527. These verses about the Lord of Tirunaraiyur who was the cause of salvation of Vasudeva in Mathura, are composed by Tirumangai. Those who recite these verses will truly become immortals.

Happy new year! 😊
